So She Sings
Over the weekend, I ambled my way over to my local independent record shop for an in-store set by Cortney Tidwell. This was the song that I was hoping she would play:
It’s my favorite song from her new album, Boys. The chorus is what does it for me. The song is already damn good to begin with, but when that chorus hits (about 80 seconds in), the songs achieves a greater lever of damn-goodedness.
And it only happens once, which is a shame. It’s OK, though, because it just makes me want to listen to the song again. “Leave them wanting more”, ya know – it’s a lot better than beating a chorus to the ground.
In this early Monday morning haze, I can only think of one other example of a song with a fabulously catchy chorus that is only played once. It’s from Richard Hawley’s first EP:
Richard Hawley – Happy Families
There are other examples, I know, but – again – it’s Monday and I woke up way too early. Perhaps you would like to provide some examples in the comments?
She played the song, of course, and it was terrific (of course). Maybe it was on the set list all along, or maybe she just played it because I didn’t stop yelling out the title until she did (my sincere apologies to everyone in the audience) – the important thing is that she played it, along with 6 other songs of almost-equal worth, all accompanied by a fine backing band that included 3 members of Lambchop and – more importantly right now – the guy who sold me the coffee that I’m currently drinking while writing this. Thanks, Ryan.
I was hoping some video or pictures of this performance would pop up online (I was too busy yelling to take pictures), but the internet failed me on this one. So here’s a video, instead, for the last song that Cortney and her band played. It kinda looks like they just played the track in Windows Media Player with the ‘visualizations’ setting turned on, then filmed it (possibly because they blew their budget with this video), but that’s just my opinion. See for yourself:
More songs can be heard over at her Myspace page. You can purchase a copy of Boys through the City Slang Store if you so desire. The album hasn’t been released in the U.S. yet (because we suck, America – we just do), but hopefully that oversight will be rectified soon.
And – because I can’t tell a lie (HA!) – I’ll now confess that I didn’t do any yelling during her set. I was as quiet and respectful as the rest of the people there. Please forgive my dishonesty.
