Alpha Leonis
Today has been one of those days that started off hectic and has yet to let up. I’ve been running around town in full chicken-with-its-head-cut-off mode in order to get a bunch of annoying errands out of the way. It’s all necessary shit, too – stuff that I’ve put off long enough (like registering my car) that needs to be done immediately. And what is my reward for spending most of my late morning and early afternoon stuck in lunch-hour traffic? Eight hours of work! Bloody hell – I definitely picked the wrong week to release my helper monkey back into the wild. Stupid conscience.

i miss you already
In the brief moment between coming home, wolfing down a quick sandwich, and leaving for work, I brought up this blog’s Gmail and it’s very-full inbox. With no rhyme or reason, I picked a random email to read. It turned out to be a submission email from a one-man band out of Portland, Oregon that goes by the name of Alpha Leonis. Just before grabbing my keys and heading out, I went ahead and listened to the attached song, “Shadows Of Men”, which is from an upcoming album with the same name.
I only had a couple minutes before absolutely needing to leave, but I ended up sitting by my laptop for the entirety of the song’s five-and-a-half minutes. The plinky xylophone-ish melody at the beginning, backed up by some timpani hits, grabbed my attention. When the possibly-a-cello-but-more-likely-a-keyboard came in with the underlying melody, I was hooked. For those five-and-a-half minutes, I was no longer thinking about the hecticness of my day – I was simply enjoying a great song.
I was also late for work. YOU ALMOST GOT ME FIRED, ALPHA LEONIS!!!!
Ok, not really. And while I’m being honest, I should also point out that I’ve never actually owned a helper monkey. Someday, though.
Have a listen to the song in question:
While the physical release of Shadows Of Men is upcoming, a digital version of the album can be had right now by visiting the Alpha Leonis website. You’ve got two options: you can give him an email address and get it for free, or be a good person and use the Radiohead method to pay what you’d like. Be a good person, okay?
