Compare And Contrast: Lykke Li vs Wilco

still the best
This popped up on the interhypes last weekend:
Lykke Li – Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow
I wasn’t impressed. For one thing, it’s way too slow, turning a song about getting funky (yes there’s more to it, but c’mon – it’s really about the fucking) into a funeral dirge. Also, there’s a ridiculous amount of reverb on both her voice and the piano, enough to become a distraction. In the end, one of the best songs ever written ends up listlesss and boring. Stick with dancing, Lykke Li.
Some good came out of it, though, as it served to remind me of a version that Wilco would occasionally play at shows during the Jay Bennett era (*cough cough best era*). I don’t have the specifics on this track, as I found it in one of several old CD-R’s I have that were simply marked ‘Wilco Live’. All you really need to know is that it’s infinitely better than the version above.
Wilco – Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow (Live)
There are plenty of other versions out there. If you’ve got a favorite, or can pinpoint the exact date of the Wilco track, or want to say mean things to me for slagging Lykke Li, let me know in the comments. And if anyone can tell me at what point people decided to add “still” into the song title, I’d love to know.
