Let’s Listen To Some Magnetic Fields Covers – Part Five: The Miscellaneous Pile

- The Arcade Fire’s cover of “Born A Train” was featured in Part Three. Here they are again with a version of “All The Umbrellas In London” from a concert in Tokyo:

The Arcade Fire – All The Umbrellas In London (Live)

- A couple other live covers:

Ben Gibbard – The Saddest Story Ever Told (Live)
Kings of Convenience – The Luckiest Guy On The Lower East Side (Live)

- “The Book Of Love” is nowhere near my list of favorite tracks from 69 Love Songs, but that appears to be a minority opinion, as people seem to love covering this track. We’ve already heard Catherine A.D. cover this song in Part Four – here are three other artists giving it a try:

Mike Doughty – The Book Of Love (Live)
Robin Pecknold – The Book Of Love (Live)
Peter Gabriel – The Book Of Love

- A very nice reader pointed me over to this link for a 2008 tribute album, 21 Love Songs: A Tribute To The Magnetic Fields. It’s a pretty strong collection of covers from bands you’ve probably never heard of. Go and give it a listen, then download your favorites. Here are the three tracks that stood out most for me:

Evripidis And His Tragedies – Time Enough For Rocking When We’re Old (more from this band here)
Secret Owl Society – 100,000 Fireflies (more from this band here)
Your Yellow Dress – Absolutely Cuckoo (more from this band here)

- Here’s a dude named Tom Milsom cleverly doing a cover of “All My Little Words” with the help of a Gameboy:

- The Points North – a folk band previously unknown to me – has a very nice cover of “Come Back To San Francisco” that can be listened to at the Grinding Tapes blog.

- Finally, our very own contributor, Ben, sent me this version of “Candy” that he recorded many years ago.  It’s very tender, which is no surprise, as Ben is by-far the most sensitive guy I know.

Benoch – Candy

That’s almost it for this series.  There’s one final part coming up next Sunday, which should provide a fitting conclusion – I’ll leave it at that.  Enjoy the tunes, and have a lovely Sunday.
